Important NYSTRS Member Information: Illness and Death Benefits
We understand that thinking about serious illness or death can be difficult, but having the right information is crucial for protecting yourself and your loved ones. We've added a vital resource document from the New York State Teachers' Retirement System (NYSTRS) to our resources page to guide you through these challenging times.

This document provides important details on what to do if an active member becomes critically ill or faces a significant surgery, including filing for disability protection or a disability retirement application. It also outlines the steps for beneficiaries when an active member or a retired member passes away.

Key topics covered include:
-
Filing for Disability Protection and the potential benefits if the member passes away from the condition noted on the application (which may be more than the In-Service Death Benefit).
-
What beneficiaries receive when an active member passes away (In-Service Death Benefit and member's contributions balance).
-
Contact numbers for NYSTRS to report the death of an active or retired member.
-
The importance of submitting a death certificate for a retired member.
-
Information on Power of Attorney for benefit transactions.
-
Contacts for former employers and applicable unions (like NYSUT) for potential health insurance or life insurance.
